For most kids, a new pair of shoes is a simple milestone—something outgrown and replaced without much thought. But for many families, that “simple” purchase carries real weight. New shoes can mean confidence in the classroom, comfort on the playground, and the ability to fully participate in everyday life.
That’s where New Shoe Day steps in—making sure every child has the opportunity to put their best foot forward.
MEETING A BASIC NEED WITH LASTING IMPACT
Based right here in Indiana, New Shoe Day is on a mission to ensure every child has access to safe, properly fitting footwear so they can move, play, and thrive.
And the need is greater than many people realize. Across the state, kids are showing up in shoes that are worn out, too small, or missing altogether—creating barriers to participation in school, sports, and everyday activities.
In response, New Shoe Day has built a growing statewide network, partnering with schools, shelters, and youth-serving organizations to get shoes directly to the kids who need them most.
The impact is tangible:
- More than 11,000 “new shoe days” have been delivered to children across Indiana
- The organization supported 5,500 kids in a single year
- Today, New Shoe Day works with more than 50 community partners and operates shoe pantries across the state
It’s a simple idea with powerful results: remove the barrier, unlock the opportunity.
Founded on the belief that something as fundamental as a well-fitting pair of shoes can transform a child’s experience, New Shoe Day works closely with schools and community organizations to identify students in need. From there, the mission is straightforward—provide brand-new, high-quality athletic shoes to kids at no cost and without barriers.
But the impact extends far beyond footwear.
Like many of the organizations we spotlight, New Shoe Day addresses an immediate need while helping unlock something deeper. Proper shoes can reduce injuries, encourage physical activity, and remove one more obstacle standing in the way of a child’s success. Just as importantly, receiving something new—something chosen specifically for them—can instill pride, belonging, and confidence.
It’s a small moment that can make a lasting difference.
MORE THAN A PAIR OF SHOES
Of course, this work isn’t just about footwear.
A new pair of shoes means a child can run at recess without pain, participate in gym class without hesitation, or walk into school feeling like they belong. It supports physical health, confidence, and connection—all things that help kids succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
It’s also about dignity. One leader shared that some children receiving shoes say it’s the first time they’ve ever opened a brand-new pair from a box.
That moment matters.
New Shoe Day is built on connection—to schools, families, volunteers, and the broader Indiana community working together to support students. Partners and volunteers help make each distribution possible, ensuring every experience feels thoughtful and personal.
For the children receiving them, it’s more than just new shoes—it’s the feeling of being seen, supported, and set up for success.
And for educators and families, it’s one more way to remove a barrier and create a more equitable learning environment. When students feel comfortable and confident, they show up differently—in the classroom, on the playground, and throughout their communities.
CONNECTED TO OUR COMMUNITY—AND OUR PURPOSE
At MJ, this kind of work feels especially close to home.
New Shoe Day’s mission aligns closely with the MJ Foundation’s focus on overcoming poverty and embracing humanity—meeting immediate needs while helping create pathways for long-term opportunity.
We’ve seen that impact firsthand through our partnership supporting families at Dayspring Center. When basic needs are met—whether it’s housing, food, or something as essential as proper shoes—families gain the stability and confidence to take the next step forward.
New Shoe Day plays an important role in that larger ecosystem of support, helping ensure kids have one less barrier standing in their way.
HOW TO HELP
As New Shoe Day continues working toward its vision of becoming Indiana’s statewide “shoe bank,” community support remains critical.
Here are a few ways to get involved:
- Make a donation to help provide new shoes for kids in need
- Partner with the organization to support a local school or community program
- Volunteer or advocate to help expand their reach across Indiana
Because every child deserves the chance to walk into their day feeling confident, comfortable, and ready for what’s ahead.
